Which is the best wireless solution for utilities in Latin America? Matters related with spectrum. How other countries deal with this matter?
Several wireless solutions have been disseminated and promoted as capable of supporting intelligent networks while new solutions are also being developed.
As those networks are being deployed nowadays, the utilities want to know which options they have in medium and long-term to create intelligent network and how the investment might be protected, considering the expected lifespan and the increase in the network complexity in a ten years period. PMP radios in unlicensed band? WiMesh outdoor (802.11n)? WiMax (802.16 in licensed band- Why don´t we have spectrum for utilities in Brazil?) LTE / 4G?

As utilities examine new technologies and applications to make their power grids 'smarter', they must overcome several operational complexities, including efficiently monitoring remote assets and meeting higher security requirements. To address these challenges, utility companies are incorporating satellite IP communications into their smart grid strategies, enabling instant access to any location and situational awareness via monitoring real-time data from all their facilities and customer sites. This session will focus on the vital role that satellite networks can play to enhance reliability and support Smart Grid and other critical applications.

With the arrival of the IP protocol, networks automation became exposed to a number of risks that did not exist before. To deal with these threats - including intentional attacks, unauthorized access or configuration errors - we need to prepare the environment with the correct tools and processes. PromonLogicalis brings its experience and the most advanced technology to protect networks automation, ensuring visibility of infrastructure, without interfering with normal operation.

10:50 – 11:20 PANEL: network security for Smart Grid Presentation Title - Holistic View of Network Infrastructure for AMI systems
PANEL: network security for Smart Grid Every day we turn the light, we open the tap, we buy food, and we use medical services. The society believes and trusts in those services that are really important to our survival. However, those simple activities can only work if the infrastructure works correctly. Without them, the society as we know would stop working.
The improvement of that infrastructure pretends to increase the prosperity of the nation in terms of quality of life but the vulnerability of attacks with malicious intentions and failures have also increased considerably.
Besides that, we need to protect those infrastructures of critical mission and increase their resilience. As those infrastructures interconnect the private sector, public organizations and countries, there will be only possible to increase their resilience and improve their protection through the collaboration between international organizations willing to share the knowledge among all parts involved.

14:00 – 14:30 Presentation Title – Creating communication links (telemetry and Terabit) on networks using OPGW for Ultra Long Lines. Presentation Title- Main projects of R&D supported by ANEEL in telecom area and smart grid.
Worldwide power companies are expanding their transmission networks and they put a significant amount of optical fibers along the routes of transmission. The optical fiber is for personal use, but is also often used to build a robust transmission network, with bandwidth and wavelengths suitable to be rented by other operators.
Traditionally, optical regeneration has been used every 80 km / 50 miles. Optical amplification technology that is currently available can take all optical regeneration sites for optical transmission distances up to 250 km / 155 miles for systems of multiple wavelengths 40G/100G. For a single channel with a data rate STM16 / OC-48 carrying information telemetry, optical amplification can eliminate all local regeneration assets for distances up to 400 km / 250 miles.

In many utility companies from Europe, North or Latin America, the telecom service business is creating appreciable resources with relative low risk. Some companies get incentives to execute that activity while others are forbidden of executing them. Listen and participate in the discussion of several business models and have a better understanding of how that business can encourage your company to share the telecom infrastructure for the benefit of all parts involved.
